Why do I want to write a blog about baking?

Baking and food seems to be a trending topic nowadays. Instagram explodes with pictures of the perfect baked and decorated cupcakes, Pinterest is full of pictures of the most delicate cakes, which recipes are incredibly hard to follow, and there are hundreds or maybe thousands of blogs out there talking about how to make the healthiest smoothie or banana pancake. So why bothering on reading a new blog? What do I want to write in this blog that is not already there in some other page or social network? If you really are asking me that, then there’s nothing you can find in here that you probably can’t find somewhere else. I am not going to lie.

I just got seriously into baking during the last 2 years, but it was something that was deep inside of me for a longer time than that. Of course, by ‘got seriously’ I don’t really mean that is my current job or anything. I just decided to take a degree on Pastry and Baking as a one of my year goals in 2015. It was something that really interested me for a long time, even since I was a kid. It was not my life career election anyways, so I didn’t do anything about it other than try new recipes once in a while. I was not expecting it to be a big deal, I just wanted to learn how to make baked things more delicious or prettier. But since I enrolled in that program something changed on me. I discovered that I could spent hours in the kitchen and I did not get bored or tired after standing so long. Moreover that I could do it after working 8 hours all days and even spending midnights in the kitchen. I also discovered that is not so easy as it seems and often the effort behind it is not given the right value.

About a year ago I tried to create my first baking business with my sister, who has also studied baking with me ❤️ (check her out at @carlif).

We started baking for mostly friends and family and we even tried to go out and set our presence in the social networks. It didn’t last long. life changes moved me to Canada. And that is also part of the motivation of this blog. I couldn’t stop thinking about Baking, looking at blogs, recipes, starting to have my favourite Pastry Chefs, buying books and practicing. And then I thought of restarting back my business, or maybe a new one, but I learnt that it is kind of hard here in BC, because of licenses and regulations. After of hours of frustration thinking about how could I do that without having to open a real place to be able to cook for selling, I decided to take a totally different approach…

What I wanted is to continue learning, to improve and to share my learnings. Also I wanted to try new things and make people try them. So I thought a blog could be the right place for exactly that. Even if can’t sell my creations, I can make maybe other people try them by posting the recipe. I also can create my style and show it to the world and even prepare the ground for a future real business if it happens to be possible. Finally I also love writing, but for some reason I stopped my passion some years ago. And since I always wanted to re-start it, I think this is the perfect opportunity to achieve many different of my needs right now.

Even if it’s one in thousands of baking blogs, I hope you can enjoy reading it as much as I am enjoying the ride (yes, writing!). I also hope it inspires someone, somehow, even if it is starting a new blog or a new baking course!

My plan is to start with some series of posts and publish weekly. I am waiting for your feedback, but the series I have planned are:

  • Baking 101: were I will put my own vision/version of Patisserie classic techniques

  • Recipes at the Pantry: a collection of signature recipes with step-by-step sections and lots of pictures

  • Shopping List: shopping recommendations, baking supplies, cooking utensils, kitchen props, and all those things that make us say: “shut up and take my money!”

  • Reading List: of course, book recommendations!

  • Food-Photography 101: this will also be my own 101 course, since I am really at the basics of food photography, but I am willing to share my new learnings.

If you wish to read a new section please send me any feedback at info@pantrybythesea.com

Till the next post!
